New Ways to Address Poverty
Posted by Huibert Fousert on

I recently came across this statistic and I think it carries a lot of weight as we consider how to engage the issue of extreme poverty. "Every 1 percent increase in entrepreneurship results in a 2 percent decrease in the poverty rate. " So often we limit what it looks like to care for the poor. We develop ideas and try to implement them in ways that are ineffective. This stat really challenges me and is a key, I believe, to seeing the poor coming out of extreme poverty. Lets go out and train, encourage, and partner with the entrepreneurs...
Molly Hardwick and the Simple Kind
Posted by Huibert Fousert on

We had the honor of getting to ask Molly Hardwick from The Simple Kind a few questions - here's what she had to say. What originally drew you to ethical garment manufacturing? Fashion has always been an interest of mine, and I always had a feeling I would be involved in it somehow, but I knew it had a dark underbelly of human rights abuse that made me hesitant to get involved. I heard whispers of the fair trade movement and was always curious to learn more. I spent five years traveling with a Christian humanitarian organization and started to...
Kairos Traders And Freedom Business

Since I have been studying business as mission - I have had the privilege to see behind the curtain of Kairos Traders. My whole perspective of business totally shifted. Especially "Freedom Businesses" that meet the need of a social business more than...

When describing our Kalpana scarves that are made by Purnaa I explain that they are made from up-cycled silk saris. Since this isn't a super well known term I wanted to take a moment to share what up-cycling is. Up-Cycling is reusing (discarded objects or material) in such a way as to create a product of a higher quality or value than the original. So what's the difference then between recycling and up-cycling? When something is recycled - typically plastics, paper, metals or glass – it is broken down so the basic materials recovered can be remade into something new. These products however...
Flight Attendant Stops Human Trafficking
Posted by Huibert Fousert on

This was a story that has been circulating for the past week or so and is well worth the read. A flight attendant was able to prevent a teenager being trafficked before last year's Super Bowl. Airline Ambassadors International is working at training airline workers to spot victims of human trafficking and hopefully continue to prevent human trafficking. The full article can be found here.
